Joint Establishment of a CTA Dialyzer Production Plant with Toyobo —Strengthen the production system to meet growing global demand

Nipro Corporation has decided to build an integrated production plant for cellulose triacetate (CTA) dialyzers (artificial kidneys) jointly with Toyobo Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kita-ku, Osaka; President & Representative Director: Takeuchi Ikuo; hereinafter “Toyobo”). The new plant will be located within the premises of the Company’s Odate Factory (No. 7 Building). To meet global demand, which is expected to steadily increase, for dialyzers, the two companies intend to increase production capacity and aim to begin operation of the new plant in July 2024.

A dialyzer is a medical device used to purify blood and remove body wastes and other toxins by dialysis for patients with chronic renal failure resulting from kidney function loss. The Company has manufactured dialyzers at the Odate Factory using CTA hollow fiber membranes supplied by Toyobo’s Iwakuni Production Center (Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) since the early 1980s. Dialyzers with CTA hollow fiber membranes have excellent biocompatibility and ability to remove substances, and theyhave been widely used around the world.

At the new plant, Toyobo will make hollow fibers from raw materials during the front-end process, while the Company will process them to make finished products (dialyzers) in the back-end process. This smooth integrated system that seamlessly combines the two companies’ manufacturing processes will drastically improve production efficiency.

The number of patients requiring artificial dialysis is expected to increase globally at a rate of 7 percent per year, which will inevitably boost demand for dialyzers. The Company will work closely with Toyobo to meet the wide-ranging needs of patients who require dialysis treatment around the world.

Outline of the new plant
  • Location: Hanukiyachi 8-7, Niida, Odate City, Akita Prefecture (within NIPRO’s Odate Factory site)
  • Total floor space: Approx. 31,000 m2 (NIPRO: 15,000 m2; Toyobo 16,000 m2)
  • Structure: Steel frame, three stories
  • Production item: CTA dialyzers
  • Start of construction: July 2021
  • Start of operation: July 2024 (scheduled)
  • Capital investment: Approx. 17 billion yen

From Healthcare Asia Magazine

Two years into the coronavirus pandemic, nations and institutions remain wary of enclosed and crowded areas because of the airborne nature of the virus. Nipro Corporation, one of the leading manufacturers of medical devices and pharmaceuticals in the world, launched its new disinfecting agent, CL Fine, as one of the few effective control measures against airborne diseases available in the market. Hailing from Japan, Nipro Corporation won the Disinfection Product Innovation of the Year at the Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards.

The Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards is presented by Healthcare Asia, lauding medtech companies that have risen above the hurdles of infection control. Recipients of the Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards have pushed the medtech industry by innovating breakthrough products, solutions and initiatives to better serve their customers whilst remaining steadfast during the crisis.

CL Fine is an ionless hypochlorous acid water (HOCl) that inactivates a variety of viruses and bacteria. As a liquid form, CL Fine has an inactivating effect on SARS-CoV-2. Apart from a liquid form, CL Fine also comes in an aerosol form to help clean indoor spaces. CL Fine has been found effective in reducing human coronavirus (HCoV-OC43) by 99.78% in a non-touch disinfection study. Another study has proven aerosol CL Fine effective in eliminating test bacteria in a hospital room by 99.999%.

The breakthrough that is CL Fine is made possible by Nipro’s unique electrolysis and purification technologies that generate the ultra-pure ionless hypochlorous acid water or “HOCl.” HOCl is a powerful disinfectant, having both antiviral and antibacterial properties. HOCl works by penetrating the membranes of the virus or bacteria and rendering it inactive.Nipro Corporation designed CL Fine with the reality of inevitably visiting crowded, indoor spaces in mind. Utilising ionless technology, CL Fine addresses the lack of commercially available airborne disease control measures. CL Fine is tested and demonstrated as a safe and convenient solution as the world continues to adapt to life during the pandemic.

Since its introduction in Japan in September 2020, more than 2,500 medical facilities (hospital/clinic), pharmacies, and other facilities such as corporate offices in the country have been using CL Fine atomizer and liquid, proving CL Fine as a game-changing product that fits the customers’ needs.

Notice of Establishment of Medical Device Sales Subsidiary in the
Socialist Republic of Vietnam

We are pleased to announce that our consolidated subsidiary, Nipro Asia Pte Ltd. (Head Office: Singapore;
President: Seigo Tsuchiya), has established a medical device sales subsidiary, Nipro Sales Vietnam Limited, in
the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The new subsidiary will start operations in January 2022.

In Vietnam, an ASEAN member state undergoing rapid economic growth, sales of Nipro medical devices
have been carried out through local agents. By establishing a sales company in Ho Chi Min City, the largest
city in Vietnam, where further market growth is expected, we will build a direct sales system for dialysis
products, strengthen sales promotion support for the local agents handling hospital products, promote local
consumption of locally produced products, and provide more community-based, meticulous services, thereby
enhancing the presence of the “Nipro brand” in the region.

With the addition of the newly established Nipro Sales Vietnam Limited, the Nipro Group now has 219
overseas bases in 58 countries. Going forward, we will continue to promote the expansion of overseas bases
and endeavor to increase our sales and production capabilities.

Earth, the only living planet with her key inhabitant, chiefy the homo sapiens, are constantly in threat of depletion of her finite resources. Nipro recognises this and therefore sprang into action, constantly and actively engaging conservation efforts and green initiatives.

Besides reduction of paper and energy consumption (digital signed documents, installation of solar panels on rooftops on our massive manufacturing plants), Nipro takes a step further this year to look into innovative ways of reducing and reusing packaging materials (one of the major contributors of waste).

In conjunction with the National Environment Agency of Singapore (NEA) Mandatory Packing Report directives we will be looking at a Three-Pronged Approach (3PA).

Firstly we will study the possibility of using ‘greener’ alternative and/or reduced packaging materials without compromising on its structural integrity and with full compliance with the local Regulatory Authorities.

Next, we will do our part by educating our customers the importance of exercising their social responsibilities of either reusing the packaging as much as possible or to ensure proper disposal by a certified recycling company.

And lastly, we will assess the feasibility of recollection of packaging materials to be reused internally. Why do we care? Because there is only one world that we live in.

Japan’s Nipro pumps $1bn into doubling output of artificial kidneys

OSAKA — Japanese medical device manufacturer Nipro has decided to spend more than 100 billion yen ($958 million) to step up global production of artificial kidneys used in dialysis machines, expecting a steady rise in the number of people worldwide with diabetes.

The investment, which run through fiscal 2026, will go mainly toward factories in Vietnam and the home market. Total output capacity will double to 12 million units a month.

This expansion will support Nipro’s plans to boost dialyzer sales in emerging countries, where diabetes patients have increased with economic growth.

Nipro will spend 36 billion yen at a medical device factory in Vietnam to add dialyzer production equipment starting in fiscal 2022. Dialyzer output capacity will gradually rise to 3 million a month. The plant will serve as a supply hub for Southeast Asia.

In Japan, roughly 50 billion yen will go into expanding capacity at the mainstay Odate plant in Akita Prefecture. The location will churn out between 5.5 million to 6 million units a month by fiscal 2025, up 60% to 70%.

Nipro will boost production in other factories in India and China, lifting monthly global output to 12 million units or more by fiscal 2026 from 5.5 million.

Meanwhile, Nipro plans to increase the dialysis centers it operates in 10 countries to 300 locations from 110 by the end of 2024. The dialysis centers are mostly located in Latin America and Asia.

Nipro will forge stable sales channels by building up its own network of supply recipients.

Dialyzers made by Nipro are cited for their sophisticated performance in filtration and high biocompatibility. Its sales of the devices grew 11% to 72.1 billion yen during the year ended March, with 70% coming from abroad.

Nipro holds the second-largest global market share in dialyzers, at roughly 20%. It will actively pursue German leader Fresenius Medical Care, whose share comes to around 40%.

Economic development in emerging countries often changes dietary habits and the level of medical care. The number of people receiving treatment for diabetes has risen as a result.

More than 460 million adults live with diabetes worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation. Nipro projects the number of dialysis patients to increase at an annual pace of 7%.

“It’s a situation where the more you make, the more you sell,” a Nipro representative said of dialyzers.

Nipro PharmaPackaging acknowledged a long time ago that business growth could only happen hand in hand with challenging sustainability goals. While continuously striving to provide high quality products, service, and technologies to our customers, we are committed to reducing the impact of our business activities on the environment. In this respect, Nipro PharmaPackaging Germany (NPG), with its forward-thinking sustainability strategy, is one of the drivers within Nipro.

The NPG sustainability strategy* is derived from and aligned with Nipro’s long-term business strategy where the impact of the business strategy on the environment is evaluated. Factors that require actions are prioritized and provide the base to the formulation of sustainability goals. For NPG, the 2025 goals are focused on efficiency, environmental footprint, and empowerment.

Avoiding energy wastage is essential for the efficiency of NPG’s manufacturing and business operations. The challenge is to continue and expand the manufacturing output while improving the energy performance and minimizing the use of natural resources.

NPG has reduced its CO2 emission by 19% since 2015 and come 2025, aims to have it reduced by 30%. These significant reductions were achieved by multiple factors:

  • Installing a state-of-the-art power and heating system
  • Utilizing waste heat recovery systems across the plants
  • Applying absorption chillers for the air ventilation systems of the ISO clean rooms
  • Equipping the plants with smart energy meters for real time check and control of the energy consumption
  • Renewing the machinery and equipment at both plants

Additionally, NPG’s CO2 footprint was reduced by 20% over the last 5 years.

Additionally, NPG’s CO2 footprint was reduced by 20% over the last 5 years. This goal was achieved by increasing the share of renewable energy within the energy mix purchased by NPG as well as a leap in the energy efficiency in the production.

Water is an essential resource, and we have the responsibility to use it effectively. NPG is making efforts to conserve water across the manufacturing network (e.g., washing process, cleanroom cooling). Compared to 2015, NPG has been able to reduce the consumption of water for injection (WFI) by 32%. NPG will also implement a reverse osmosis technology to further conserve this vital resource.

Moreover, NPG outperforms the statutory requirements for the circular economy of waste materials with a remarkable recycling share of 91.7%. Since 2017, NPG has been able to reduce its waste by 12.5%.

Treating the environment in a responsible manner starts with the right mindset. NPG fosters a culture of continuous improvement in sustainability. In this regard, our plants are successfully audited regularly. Plus, we perform internal audits throughout the year to motivate our committed employees to steadily improve their sustainable footprint. Training is an essential part of creating awareness and encouraging compliance.

NPG’s environmental management system has been awarded the ISO 14001 certification for over 20 years. What’s more, both NPG plants operated in Münnerstadt have achieved the ISO 50001 accreditation, confirming their careful use of energy.

Nipro is fully committed to staying on this challenging path for a greener future.

Nipro Digital Technologies Europe (NDTE) was awarded with 2 certificates: ISO 27001 and ISO 27701. In a period of intensive digital growth, transformation, and challenges, this is a clear statement that Nipro takes customers’ trust seriously.

15 October 2021, Belgium — Recently, Nipro Digital Technologies Europe (NDTE) was awarded with 2 digital security certificates: ISO 27001 and ISO 27701. These certificates testify that a systematic framework has been established by Nipro to ensure that information security and privacy requirements from customers, as well as government regulations, are met. Moreover, continual improvement will also be promoted.

NDTE had to meet certain requirements in order to be awarded these certificates. Arne Wauters, COO, NDTE, explains:

“We systematically identified potential risks for the scope we want to protect and established a treatment plan for them, through the implementation of security controls.”
ARNE WAUTERS, COO, NIPRO DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES EUROPE

A systematic approach for the management and implementation of risks, both known and new, was introduced with a focus on measuring, analyzing, and improving continuously.

While both certificates are for the management of information security, ISO 27001 is a certificate for the management of information security in its broadest sense. ISO 27701, in the other hand, is an addition to ISO 27001, with a specific focus on privacy information management.

Wauters further clarifies that achieving certification for both ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 was not easy:

“There is a sizeable investment in terms of cost, time, and resources. Most importantly, it’s a continuous effort. This is reflected by the on-going audits. That being said, it’s well worth pursuing. Having this solid foundation to build further upon will certainly help us in meeting these requirements and have them working for us instead of against us.”

Moving forward, this means that Nipro, as well as Nipro’s customers, can be confident that all risks will be properly managed and followed up on. Being awarded these certificates means that it is now easier to demonstrate this to customers and other stakeholders.
